A businesswoman who became a millionaire through investments in coal mining is now hundreds of thousands of pounds in debt after having spent everything on adopting 75 orphans over the past two decades. Li Lijuan, a native of Wu’an County in northern China’s Hebei Province, ran a garment business and eventually became a millionaire after successful investments in a coal mine in the 1980s. Lijuan, 46, adopted her first orphan in 1994 - a boy from the south-western province of Sichuan. And since then, she has adopted dozens more, all children who were abandoned because of illness or disabilities, or orphaned because of natural disasters and other misfortunes. Over the past 19 years, 75 children have been fostered by Lijuan, who began eating into her savings in 2008 after the coal mine she invested in shut down for urban planning purposes. She is now some 2 million RMB (200,000 GBP) in debt. Despite her financial difficulties, Lijuan has continued to raise her foster children, sometimes accommodating more than 20 at once. To do this, she has sold her properties as well as other valuables that she possessed. Lijuan also receives donations from charities, but the costs of raising her children, many of whom require extensive operations for disabilities and other birth defects, far outweigh the money she receives. She continues to send children to school in hope that education and knowledge may change their fates. Some of her foster children have gone on to receive university degrees and gain the most coveted work available in China as public servants. But Lijuan’s task was made even more difficult when, in 2011, she was diagnosed with early-stage lymphoma, for which she spent a week in hospital receiving treatment. She has always maintained that she could have used the medical expenses of her treatment on the children, who see her as their "mother". К своему 46-летию женщина истратила все свое состояние и теперь не в состоянии добыть пропитание своей немаленькой семье. Ее долг составляет на теперешний момент 300 000 долларов. По этой причине Ли вынуждена продавать свою недвижимость и прочие ценности, которыми владела. Финансовая ситуация Лу еще больше усугубилась, когда закрылась угольная шахта, в которую она вкладывала средства.

Невзирая на то, что находятся волонтеры, которые готовы взять в свою семью детей, китайские законы вынуждают Лу им отказывать. Поскольку все дети бывшей миллионерши получили фамилию Лиюань и официально стали ее детьми, они не могут быть больше переданы в семью и усыновлены другими детьми. На этот счет китайский закон очень строг.
